Group 2-Gender and Advertising Presentation

In media and advertising, the saying that society is trying to live by and follow is “sex sells.” Because people like sexy things, it would not matter what product is being advertised, as long as they can sexualize it, it can be sold. Gender roles in advertising refers to how gender is represented in a positive or negative light in media. Everything in today’s world is over sexualized, and “sex sells” is usually centered on women. Women are displayed as objects that are paraded around to help men’s fantasies come to life. Gender in advertising is shaping the way that people think about the world and how they treat the people around them. Phrases like “It’s a man’s world,” and “Women belong in the kitchen,” are heard in various places. The meaning behind ads are passed off as art when there are deeper meanings behind them.
There are people who are out there taking action, activists Scott A. Lukas and Anita Sarkeesian. The are both using media to communicate with a audience to create awareness about the problems with the stereotypical representation of gender in advertisings. It is important to understand how to deconstruct an advertisement alongside the over use of photoshop. We hope that by gaining the skill that is reading advertisements from a critical perspective, that it empowers you to be aware of the manipulation and gender representation in media and advertising.
