I will explore how each of us have had a moment in childhood when we were told we could not act like the boys. The moment that signified a loss of freedom and a loss of individuality. I was inspired by the documentary, "A Stranger in Her Own City" and how despite our very different culture, I intensely related to her. Though the consequences for breaking gender norms are much graver and even fatal in some parts of the world, I believe the feeling of loss of innocence is universal. The real induction into society is the age when you must start conforming to strictly provided gender roles.
The book will not actually be intended for children, but rather, for an older audience, comparable to the style of Sandra Scoppettone's Suzuki Beane. Like Suzuki Beane, it will be a study of a loss of innocence, a study of disillusionment. Through documenting the childhood memories of my best friends, I hope to represent the moment of submission that is relatable to women worldwide.
I like the memoir you use for your final project. I totally agree with your saying, "The real induction into society is the age when you must start conforming to strictly provided gender roles." I think gender roles are culture based and it related to a set of behavioral norms within a specific culture. I find a video on http://www.gender-focus.com/
