The amount of women working in the non-fiction documentary film industry is
much larger than that of the narrative film industry. Still they struggle to
fight a way in this man-dominated industry and are offered less chances than
their male counterparts. We explore the documentaries made by women about women
like Miss Representation and Paris is Burning,
while also trying to dissect the non-fiction filmmaking world trying to find
the reasons why women are still discriminated against at work. Another example
of a documentary from women about women we found is WONDER WOMEN! the
Untold Story of Heroïnes, from which we shall show a clip where they
use the discours of heroïnes to explain how the media fails to produce images
of powerful women.
We will also talk about the value of independent films and film festival
and how they can form a platform where it might be able for women to tell their
stories. Hopefully there will be more freedom in these films, because they
don't have the major corporations forcing their hands in repeating moneymaking
stories filled with stereotypes and tropes about women We will show a clip from
the Codes and Modes panel on gentrification and documentary films. We will end
our presentation with a discussion about this value of independent films and
also about the definition, which is still very problematic.
