Who I am

In our day today, the whole world revolves around social media so much that it has become an intricate part of our daily lives, especially for me at least. My role in media consumption is that of intake and source of knowledge for what’s going on around us. As an absorber of media, I enjoy learning this knowledge of the real world around us through the New York Times and articles through twitter that make information available in a heartbeat without you having to check individual sites periodically or wait for a paper to arrive at your doorstep.

As an active media maker in media consumption, I love taking on a journalistic role and interviewing people, learning about places, and sharing my information through my writing, photographs, and videos. I love spreading the word about events that are going on that people might not know about such as free live fashion shows this week that pop up randomly over the city.

Social media is an amazingly useful tool, but the sad side of it is how it pressures you to censor yourself in order to appear a certain way to others. Your social media footprint to you either becomes something you need to protect in orders for employers and other people to see you a certain way and respect you. This, for example, is a scar on your social media footprint:

A twitter fiend showing
the social media world
how she blazes O's.
Many people are oblivious to how important it is to keep that footprint clean, but I find it sad that you can’t be 100% who you are on your own profile. I love to be silly sometimes, too, but even that I have to censor. I can post memes or silly pics like:

Squirrel stretching

But I can’t make careless, angry rants and cursing continue for 5 separate posts no matter how angry I am. The level of authenticity is always controlled by the user no matter what social media platform they are on, but the fact that it’s controlled is necessary unfortunately. The media has become part of my life and my identity because it’s also part of my career to know how to manage and use social media to my advantage. I used to hate twitter and refused to have one. But that was before I knew the magic it’s capable of and how I love harnessing that magic for meaningful purposes.
